A roadhouse in Paris?

marycalursoarticlepicbydavemorton12213I guess everything does co me full circle well at least it does for 2006 American Idol winner Taylor Hicks. The silver-maned crooner is headlining at the Napoleon Lounge in the Paris Hotel Casino in Las Vegas. As I arrive for the show I am taken aback to think about course of his journey, well what the world “believes” is his journey, which started back in 200, while in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and attempting to flee to safety like most of the state. Hicks was offered a flight by Southwest airlines to anywhere in the continental US and he chose Las Vegas where the Idol auditions just happened to be held that week.

For the Soul man dubbed Grey Charles’ musical journey started long before that tragic day, it began as a young precocious kid that adored the sounds of Otis Redding, Joe Cocker, and Ray Charles. It culminated with a young man who grew up grinding through the Birmingham Southside music scene, playing bars like Marty’s and clubs like Ona’s Music Room. It was those longtime bar owner aficionados that cheered him on and molded him and sat him down each time he wanted to hang music up for good.

So on that historic 29th day in August of 05, risking his relationship and possible homelessness he walked not only onto a plane but through the door of opportunity and grabbed on to his one shot with all his might. Not with the aspersions of becoming rich but with the hope of finally getting his voice heard!

A young boy from a divided home life, with ADHD that made it through a year or two at Auburn University struggling to even up to appearances of his well-off Mountain Brook “friends”, had finally found his way of making it and on his own terms. The setting at the Napoleon Lounge is so fitting for an up close and personal artist like Taylor Hicks, he takes you on a musical journey, a vocal marathon if you will; From ballad stand outs like “Maybe you Should” to his moving cover of Crossin Dixons “19″, to his Idol performance standouts, an amped up Soul swing version of Elvis’ “In the Ghetto” and closing out with the King’s Vegas staple “Viva Las Vegas”. Over the river and through the woods, Taylor Reuben Hicks takes you there….

Sure, running the numbers the biggest selling Idol award goes out to the likes of Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson…that is what was in the stars for them. But for this down to earth Southern Boy, stadium arenas and vast music halls were…(to use the title of his “true” sophomore LP) “Under the Radar”; Hicks is back to where it all began back in 05, but now in an intimate atmosphere at The Napoleon Lounge in the middle of the Vegas strip, bare bones, stripped down and raw, where the music as well as the man, night after night truly takes center stage.

(This review is dedicated to my friend Marty Eagle may you rest in peace and you will be in my heart always my friend!)

  1. Taylor Hicks is an amazing entertainer with so many quality skills. When I first saw him, he opened a new magical world for me. Music became fun again. He shared an emotional roller coaster ride that taught me the power and joy of his music. I laughed and cried and wanted more. Sometimes I felt like dancing even though I don’t know how. Looking forward to more Taylor Hicks. Fun, fun, fun!
